Dave attended the School for Legal Studies. Rich debated for Freedom Academy. The two Brooklyn natives became friends when they met through IMPACT's New York Urban Debate League. Each one became debate champions in their own right and discovered something about themselves along the way. They discovered a talent to teach younger people about debate and serve as role models in their communities. IMPACT believed in their abilities and hired them to work at debate camps. They taught at debate institutes in New York, New Jersey and Baltimore alongside faculty members from Harvard, Yale and New York University.
IMPACT helped Dave secure a debate scholarships for college and located funds to help Rich cover his college costs. When Rich wanted to debate in college, he found a home debating for IMPACT's NY Coalition of Colleges.
When they debated in college, they never forgot their friends or where they came from and always gave back to IMPACT's New York Urban Debate League. Now Dave is married and living in the Midwest while Rich pursues a career in the Big Apple.
Debate Delivers Dreams.
IMPACT assists several policy debate teams in the New York City area, which are members of the NY Coalition of College debate teams. Founded in the late 90s, the purpose of this program is to help college students in urban areas find more opportunities to debate by pooling coaching, monetary and evidentiary resources. These programs also partner with other IMPACT initiatives with college debaters volunteering time ans judges, mobile debate center assistants, and CITI faculty members.
Each of the colleges are members of the Cross Examination Debate Association, a national intercollegiate debate league. Over 250 colleges nationwide participate in weekend tournaments held throughout the country. By competing in policy debate students develop research skills, critical thinking, team work and advocacy through public speaking.
Current members of the NY Coalition of College debate teams are: Baruch College, Borough of Manhattan Community College, City College, Fordham University, Hunter College, John Jay College, New York University, and Queens College. Charter members are New York University and the City University of New York. Affiliate members are Pace University and Queensborough Community College.
