This year's topic area is:  Healthcare

JPMorgan Chase and the New York City Department of Education through the Office of School Programs and Support Services, have been in partnership for the past 23 years in providing New York City high schools with the opportunity to engage in a values-based debate competition. In 2001, The School of Public Affairs at Baruch College was engaged to coordinate program administration for the JPMorgan Chase Lincoln-Douglas Debates. In recent years, the IMPACT Coalition was contracted to direct the JPMorgan Chase Lincoln Douglas competitions for the 2004-06 seasons. The program and competition is designed to foster oral communication activities and enhance research and reasoning skills through participation in a citywide debate program.

Each year a debate topic/resolution is determined by the LDD planning committee and provided to the participating schools The resolution is a proposition of value rather than a proposition of policy. Debaters are to develop argumentation on conflicting underlying principles to support their positions. Since the JPMorgan Chase Lincoln-Douglas debates are values debates, and not policy debates, students do not have to offer a specific plan of action in support of their philosophical position. This year’s topic is “resolved: that cultural or political restrictions placed on the right of access to humanitarian aid are unjustified.”
