IMPACTCoalition

STUDENT SUMMER TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

The IMPACT Coalition is pleased to announce that we are funding scholarships to summer debate institutes for New York Urban Debate League participants during the summer of 2008. Scholarships will be given to students who have shown dedication to debate, have been responsible members of the NYUDL community in the past year, and plan to continue to act as leaders for their debate team.  The number of scholarships that each school receives will depend on the size of the debate team, travel to invitational and non-NYUDL tournaments, and teacher recommendation.  Scholarships are open to first-year high school students, sophomores, and juniors who have debated in the NYUDL this year.  In consultation with debate coaches, the IMPACT Coalition will determine which students are sent to which institutes.  We will often send students from the same school to different institutes to maximize resources.  Check your exam and vacation schedules first.

Students should do the following to apply for a travel scholarship:

Potential Institute Dates and Locations:

If you have not been to a debate institute and you are a first or second year debater, you may choose from:

Please note the following:

1) CITI, Towson and Gonzaga are potential institutes for students regardless of their level of experience and previous attendance at institute.  Gonzaga has several tracks and an amazing lecture team including James Roland, JP Lacy and Cate Morrison.

2) You may be considering applying to a college (for school, not for debate institute) that is not listed in the category of institutes for which you are eligible, but that appears in the other list.  If so, and you would like to attend the institute on that list so that you can familiarize yourself with the college, you may apply for an eligibility waiver.

3) Coaches, please be aware that Emory, Vermont, and Towson offer coaches’ workshops.  There is not a separate application process for this, but if you are interested in attending, please let us know.

4) In addition, coaches may be asked to attend an institute as chaperones.  If you are available, please let us know.

5) Northwestern has instituted a grade requirement so only students who meet their academic standards will be included.

6) If you have applied for a different institute than the ones listed, please inform your coach ASAP.

What the Scholarships Include:

Scholarships include the cost of airfare, transportation from the airport to the Institute, food, travel insurance, debate materials, and a small stipend to help with out-of-pocket expenses. Scholarships will not include transportation to/from the airport in New York, telephone calls, etc. The IMPACT Coalition will purchase plane tickets and pay tuition directly to the institutes. Students awarded scholarships will receive registration packets for the institutes and contact information for the institute administrator. Some students may receive partial scholarships to facilitate more student participation.
