RATIONALE FOR MOBILE SATELLITE SUPPORT CENTERS

Each year, some students travel to the Support Centers but many do not. The result is lessened abilities to debate, a lack of understanding or appreciation of the NYUDL history, community and culture and a diminished connection between individual schools and debate resulting in greater challenges with sustainability. This year, we embark on a new course with the creation of mobile satellite support centers and pursuit of a partnership with the NYC Department of Education Library Services division.

  • Both the Bronx and Brooklyn centers are located far from subway stations. The physical distance involved serves as an impediment for many students to attend. This year, IMPACT will implement a hub system where students have the option of visiting the permanent centers or on designated days, visiting “satellite” centers at other schools. In each case, we will have ideally a permanent room, a relationship with the librarian and staffing from college volunteers from the debate teams at NYU, New School, Columbia, CUNY and Fordham University. The Librarian Services division is excited about students making more use of the library and wishes to partner with IMPACT to provide locations for these centers, better research materials and customized topic packets on the high school resolution and wants to determine ways to work together.
