In August, a group of young women scholars will participate in a debate & leadership training led by acclaimed faculty from across the country administered by the #1 national provider of debate-related mentoring services, the IMPACT Coalition. The Improving Mentor Practices and Communication Techniques (IMPACT) Coalition is a mentoring and educational development organization that expands opportunities for urban students, schools and organizational partners by providing debate training, literacy assistance, curricula, and mentoring services to develop informed, concerned citizens. IMPACT advocates debate as a key to success in building healthier communities and tomorrow's leaders. These students will come from local high schools in the New York area and will apply this training in their school setting.
The purpose of the IMPACT training will be to prepare young women with the critical thinking, public speaking and effective leadership skills. Trainers will help students identify challenges, overcome fears of public speaking and think about the roles women take in leadership today.
Successful women from law, business, academic and politics will make special guest appearances to share their stories and network with the future leaders. Speakers will include entrepreneur Tiffany Tucker, attorney Kathryn Rubino and lead advisor to City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, L. Joy Williams.
BALI participants will be active in their community and engage in, at least, one of the programs during the next four months.
SCHOOL-BASED YOUNG WOMEN'S CAMPAIGN
Using the principles learned during two weeks of training, students will examine life in their school. They will then design and implement a program that will enhance the experience of young women who attend that institution. Students will be expected to reach out to community leaders to publicize the program. They will present their achievements to a panel of experts during the fall.
VOICES OF BALI PROJECT
Students will organize a public debate focusing on an important issue that affects young women today. The debate may be held in their school, a local shopping center, borough hall or other public venue. Students will be expected to select a topic, arrange for celebrity judges, advertise the event and then hold the debate with some assistance from BALI staff.
- LEADERS OF TOMMORROW DEBATES
Students will compete from prestige and prizes in the first-ever BALI Leaders of Tomorrow Debate Tournament. The November event will feature debates on a topic selected by the BALI founder and crafted by the IMPACT Coalition that demonstrates the skills developed during the BALI sessions at CITI 2005.
- OCTOBER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Associate Dean of Students Affairs at Hunter College has partnered with BALI to enhance the leadership experience of the students. Hunter will provide scholarships to 15 BALI graduates who will be able to attend their annual leadership conference on October 14th as special guests.
