The IMPACT Coalition is a nonprofit, mentoring and educational development
organization that expands opportunities for urban students, schools and
organizational partners by providing debate training, debate curricula, and
support services to develop informed, concerned citizens.
We support Debate in the Schools, in the Community and in the Classroom as a
strategy to help kids get into college and succeed in later life. The
program model was:
- recognized twice in the last five year by the White House
- replicated in 20 cities nationwide
- shown to increase literacy rates in a single year by 25% according to
a national study
- reduced likelihood of engaging in risk-taking behaviors (teen pregnancy,
drugs and school violence)by 300% compared with non-debating peers
- provided millions of dollars in debate scholarship offers to attend college
- featured on MSNBC, MTV, and BET
- covered by the NY Times, Daily News and the Chronicle of Higher
Education

What does the involvement of the IMPACT Coalition mean for me as a coach?
IMPACT's staff has more than three decades of experience supporting the needs of teachers and coaches involved in debate. We have developed an array of coaching manuals, guidebooks, electronic resources, teaching aids and other materials that could help support your work. Additionally, IMPACT provides professional development opportunities using the expertise of the Coalition staff and the coaching community.
What does the involvement of the IMPACT Coalition mean for me as a teacher?
IMPACT’s philosophy is that the cornerstone of any effective debate program is the teacher who brings to the program to life in a school. Our staff spends considerable time developing ways to support teachers outside of the debate round. IMPACT has resources to assist in your pedagogical development and to support you in locating fellowships and teaching awards. Through our Debate Across the Curriculum program, you can reach well beyond the students on your team and infuse your school with the excitement of debate.
How will information be communicated about the program and the resolution?
Schools will receive regular communications through the electronic newsletter called the Coaches Chronicle. The newly updated IMPACT website contains a section with information on coaching manuals, tournament registration, directions, and programmatic updates.
During the previous academic year thanks to our hard-working teachers and dedicated staff, IMPACT has:
Since inception, IMPACT has started debate programs at 102 schools in NYC and expanded debate services at 45 other institutions. Over 5000 students and 300 teachers have been introduced to the power of debate through your generous support of our work. IMPACT is a partner organization of the ASSOCIATED LEADERS OF URBAN DEBATE (ALOUD)--www.debate.leaders.org
