Mio went to school in Harlem and grew up in the Bronx. When she was young, she was shy. In high school, she discovered debate and was exposed to different cultures and communities. Mio found her voice and went on to be one of the top debaters in NYC, attending Middlebury College. Upon graduation, Mio returned to NY to work at Sesame Flyers International. Each day, she helps hundreds of young people from backgrounds not so different from her own find themselves through the power of her voice and the passion in her heart. Earlier this year, she met with congressional leaders in Washington to share her story of what debate can do. This proud, accomplished woman from will never be silenced again.
Debate Delivers Dreams.

After reading about the program in US News & World Report, producers from CBS' 60 Minutes came to observe IMPACT's Coalition Institute and Training Initiative and decided "urban debate" was a story that needed to be told.
CEO Wil Baker introduced them to the heads of the urban debate programs in Atlanta, Newark and Baltimore and allies elsewhere. The producers tell the story of debate through one school but it's a message that's been replicated nationwide. Debate can do amazing things for young people as they discover what they can do with the power of debate.
The IMPACT Coalition is a nonprofit, mentoring and educational development organization that expands opportunities for urban students, schools and organizational partners by providing debate training, debate curricula, and support services to develop informed, concerned citizens.
We support Debate in the Schools, in the Community and in the Classroom as a strategy to help kids get into college and succeed in later life. The program model was:
- recognized twice in the last five year by the White House
- replicated in 20 cities nationwide
- shown to increase literacy rates in a single year by 25% according to a national study
- reduced likelihood of engaging in risk-taking behaviors (teen pregnancy, drugs and school violence)by 300% compared with non-debating peers
- provided millions of dollars in debate scholarship offers to attend college
- featured on MSNBC, MTV, and BET
- covered by the NY Times, Daily News and the Chronicle of Higher Education
Manhattan Center debaters and ACORN alumni participate in Party 18 festivities (check out 50 parties.com for details)
New peer-reviewed U of Michigan study of urban debate proves that African American male debaters
were 70 percent more likely to graduate from high school
were three times less likely to drop out
were 50 percent more likely to reach the ACT college-readiness benchmark for English
were 70 percent more likely to reach the ACT benchmark for Reading than non-debaters, even after accounting for 8th grade achievement.
During the current academic year thanks to your support, IMPACT has:
- SERVED OVER 750 STUDENTS AT 91 SCHOOLS THROUGH COMPETITIVE, CURRICULAR AND COMMUNITY DEBATE PROGRAMS WITH LD TOURNAMENTS STILL TO COME IN APRIL
- CONDUCTED NINE DEBATE EVENTS WITH MANY ATTRACTING OVER 200 DEBATERS EACH
- QUALIFIED A RECORD 55 TEAMS FOR THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
- FUNDED TRAVEL, REGISTRATION & LODGING FOR DEBATERS TO TRAVEL OVER 22,000 MILES ATTENDING 16 ADDITIONAL TOURNAMENTS INCLUDING 10 OUTSIDE OF NYC
- HELPED DEBATERS WIN OVER 220 TEAM AND SPEAKER AWARDS IN COMPETITIONS
- HOSTED MINI-INSTITUTES, TWO DEBATE SYMPOSIUMS, A TWO-WEEK SUMMER INSTITUTE AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS
